The Abbey Primary Term 6 Newsletter

{item_alt_tag}

As we near the end of another school year, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on what has been an incredibly busy and rewarding summer term.

Our children have enjoyed a wide range of wonderful experiences over the past few weeks – from exciting school trips, residentials and inspiring workshops to welcoming visitors into school who have brought learning to life in memorable ways. These opportunities continue to enrich the curriculum and spark curiosity, creativity and confidence in our pupils.

A particular celebration this term has been our Year 6 SATs results, which we are proud to say are the best our school has ever achieved. Not only did our children reach results above national averages, but they also topped the outcomes across all InMAT schools. This incredible achievement is a testament to the hard work of our pupils, the dedication of our staff, and the unwavering support from you as parents and carers.

Thank you also for your fantastic support of our school summer fete, organised by Friends of The Abbey Primary. With your help, we raised over £3,800 – a phenomenal amount that will go directly back into school to fund enriching experiences and valuable resources for our children. Thank you to Friends of The Abbey Primary School for being so proactive and committed for every event you organise- always keeping the children at the heart of everything you do.

Looking ahead, we’re excited for our upcoming Music Concert and the Year 6 Prom, both of which promise to be joyful celebrations of talent, friendship, and the end of a special chapter for our oldest pupils.

On a personal note, as I approach the end of my time here, I want to say a heartfelt thank you for the love, support and kindness I’ve received over the past 21 years. It has been the greatest privilege to lead The Abbey Primary School, and I will carry with me so many amazing memories of the children, families and staff who have made this journey so special.

What a wonderful and action-packed summer term we’ve had in EYFS!

The Romans had a roar-some adventure on their trip to Gulliver’s Land, where they stepped back in time on a thrilling dinosaur walk. The children discovered all sorts of dinosaurs from the past—and even found some dinosaur eggs hidden along the way! They were all absolute superstars and made us very proud with their enthusiasm and curiosity.

All the Early Years got their buckets and spades ready for a very special seaside day! The children built magnificent sandcastles, fished in rock pools, explored the underwater world to spot fish, designed their own flags for their castles, splashed in the water, and played lots of fun seaside games. We ended the day in style with a much-loved trip to the ice cream shop—complete with a cone, sauce, and of course, sprinkles!

It’s been a truly fantastic term full of learning, laughter, and new experiences. We’re incredibly proud of how far the children have come. The Romans are now ready and raring to take on the exciting challenges of Year 1 in September, while The Vikings are looking forward to another brilliant year in EYFS, with most moving confidently into Reception.

Well done to all of our amazing children—you’ve had a brilliant year!

Key stage 1 has had a very busy term with lots of learning and fun.

Year 1 had their trip to Stanwick lakes, where they built dens and went hunting for pond creatures.

Year 2 went on their trip to Whipsnade zoo and got to see baby giraffes and rhinos!

We all got to improve our skills on scooters and had a go at some African dancing. The key stage 1 team are very proud of how much learning the children have done this term and the children are very excited to start their next year group.

Well done Key stage 1, have a restful summer break!

Years 3 and 4 have had a term packed full of fun!

Year 3 went on their school trip to Chester House to learn all about the Romans. They experienced activities such as find washing, an osteology workshop and watching a real-life archaeological dig. They have also been working hard in our DT lessons to make their very own greenhouses. It has been amazing watching how carefully they measured and cut their materials.

Year 4 have had a great summer term with their exciting Bushcraft residential taking place just before May half-term, where they embraced life outdoors for three days, working on their teamwork and resilience. They have been enjoying their weekly swimming sessions at Danes Camp and building their confidence in the water. They enjoyed exploring the Hive on transfer afternoon and are excited to move into Upper Key Stage Two.

This term Year 5 have enjoyed learning about Expressionism in Art. They used a range of colours to explore different emotions in the style of expressionist artists. The children's work is now on display.

Year 6 have been busy, facing their fears and learning new skills at Whitemoor Lakes, writing a play and making all of their own props and achieving amazing SAT's results. We are so proud of them all and wish them the best of luck at secondary school.

🏫 Getting Ready for September – A Helpful Guide for Parents

As we look ahead to the new school year, here’s a quick guide to help all families—whether new or returning—get prepared for a smooth start in September.

👕 Uniform Information

Our school uniform helps foster a sense of community and pride. The required uniform includes:

  • Bottoms: Grey or black trousers, shorts, skirts, or dresses.
  • Tops: White or red polo shirts.
  • Outerwear: Red jumpers or cardigans (plain or with the school logo).
  • Footwear: Sensible black school shoes.

If you’d like to purchase uniform items with the school logo, these are available from Brigade: https://www.brigade.uk.com. However, all uniform items can also be purchased from high street retailers such as Tesco, Asda, or Primark.

🏃‍♂️ PE Kit Requirements

Children must bring their PE kit for each lesson. This includes:

  • Black shorts or leggings
  • Sports shoes (trainers or plimsolls)
  • A t-shirt in their house colour: red, green, blue, or yellow (if possible)

Again, these items can be purchased from any high street shop.

✏️ Stationery

All necessary stationery, including pencil cases and writing equipment, is provided by the school. We kindly ask that children do not bring their own.

🍽️ School Lunches

School lunches can be booked via SchoolGrid: https://schoolgrid.co.uk. We recommend booking lunches by the Sunday before each week to avoid missed bookings and ensure your child has a meal. Late bookings may result in us needing to contact you, and your child may be at risk of not having a lunch.

🌅 Breakfast & After-School Clubs

We offer both Honeycomb Breakfast and After-School Club. These can be booked via your Arbor account. Please book in advance to secure a place, as availability is based on staff-to-child ratios. If you need assistance with booking, feel free to contact the school office.

💧 Water Bottles

Please ensure your child brings a named water bottle to school each day to stay hydrated.

🎒 School Bags

Children should bring a sensibly sized bag that fits comfortably in their individual locker. Oversized bags may not fit and can cause storage issues.
