A message from Head of School: Mrs. Kelsall
What a fantastic start to the academic year it has been at The Abbey Primary School. It has been wonderful to see our children settle so quickly into their new classes and embrace every opportunity available to them.
We are particularly proud of the new leadership opportunities introduced for pupils this term. Children have successfully applied for and taken on important roles as House Captains, Eco Team members, Play Leaders, Student Librarians and School Councillors, each with their own responsibilities and opportunities to make a positive contribution to school life.
Our House Captains have already made a fantastic impact by planting new flowers around the school, introducing house badges for every member of our school community and helping to promote and instil our Five Bees values. The Eco Team have begun regular litter-picking activities to help care for our environment, while our Student Librarians are supporting an exciting transformation of the school library. Our Play Leaders have received specialist training and are now helping to support positive play experiences across the school, and our School Councillors have already held their first meeting and set their first task, gathering ideas from their peers about improvements that can be made to school life.
There have also been many memorable learning experiences across the school. Year 6 girls enjoyed an inspiring visit to the NSG Science Show and Year 6 took part in a fascinating heart dissection as part of their science learning. Year 2 enjoyed a local history walk to the Queen Eleanor Cross, while our EYFS children thoroughly embraced their superhero theme. We were also delighted to officially open our new SEND Unit for Communication and Language, marking an exciting development for our school community.
Alongside learning, pupils have enjoyed a range of enrichment opportunities, including the FOTA Halloween discos, the pumpkin carving competition and our surprise attendance day, to name just a few highlights.
Looking ahead to next term, we have even more exciting events planned. We look forward to welcoming families to our Remembrance Day Service, preparing for our Christmas celebrations, Anti-Bullying week, a visit from Mike Reader MP during UK Parliament week and enjoying a very special experience day with the world's tallest basketball player.
Thank you for your continued support. Together, we are ensuring that every child has the opportunity to thrive, achieve and create lasting memories at The Abbey Primary School.

🎃 Spectacular Halloween Pumpkin Carving Competition
The creativity on display for our Pumpkin Carving Competition was simply outstanding! The school hallways were glowing with spooky, funny, and incredibly intricate designs. It was a tough job for our judges, but congratulations to all of our year-group winners and a huge well done to everyone who took the time to carve a masterpiece at home.
As we reach the end of this fantastic term, we want to look back and say a massive thank you to our entire school community. Your enthusiasm, creativity, and generosity made our autumn events incredibly special. Here is a recap of what we achieved together!
🌾 A Generous Harvest Festival
Our Harvest Festival was a heartwarming success. Thanks to your overwhelming generosity, we collected an incredible amount of non-perishable food and essential items. Your donations have now been delivered to The McCarthy-Dixon Foundation and St. Mary’s Church. Both organisations expressed their deepest gratitude, and your kindness will make a real difference to local families in need as we head into the colder months.
🕺 Spooktacular Halloween Disco
We wrapped up our spooky celebrations with the highly anticipated Halloween Disco! The children looked absolutely fantastic in their fancy dress costumes, and the energy on the dance floor was brilliant. A massive thank you to our amazing PTA and the parent volunteers who helped set up, chaperone, and clean up—we could not host these memorable events without your vital support.

EYFS
This term, our little learners have been discovering the world through imaginative superhero play! The children loved exploring our small world firefighter station, learning about the important role of these real-world superheroes who help keep us safe.
We also celebrated our very own superheroes, who have shown fantastic confidence, kindness and determination throughout the term.
The children had great fun creating their own Supertato characters, using their creativity and problem-solving skills to bring the story to life. To continue our superhero theme, we practised our letter formation in sparkling Superman glitter, helping to develop our early writing skills in an exciting and engaging way.
It has been wonderful to see the children's imaginations flourish as they learn through play. We are so proud of all they have achieved this term and look forward to more adventures next term!
As we come to the end of a busy and exciting term, we would like to thank all our families for their continued support. We hope you have a wonderful half-term break filled with fun, laughter and special family moments. We look forward to welcoming the children back for another term of learning, discovery and adventure. ❤️🦸♂️🦸♀️🚒✨

Year 1
This half-term, our Year 1 and Year 2 children have been busy exploring the beautiful changes that autumn brings, alongside learning about Halloween traditions. As part of their cross-curricular art and science learning, the children investigated how nature transforms at this time of year, sharing their favourite signs of the season—from colourful falling leaves and shiny conkers to pumpkins and crisp mornings! 🍂
In art, we had a closer look at the colour wheel, learning about different hues and shades to understand how artists create moods. Inspired by the natural world, the children put their knowledge to the test by designing vibrant, unique pumpkin artwork. 🎨
The scientific discovery didn't stop there! This week, the children put their knowledge of everyday materials to the ultimate test. Working together in teams, they were set a vital mission: to design and build a protective capsule to keep their "egg characters" safe from a fall. The children thought carefully about the properties of different materials to decide which would offer the best cushioning and strength. 🚀
We are incredibly proud of the teamwork, creativity, and enthusiasm the children showed across both of these fantastic projects. Well done, KS1! 🌟

Year 2
What a fantastic and busy first half of the term it has been for Year 2! Our young learners have thrown themselves into their topics with incredible enthusiasm and curiosity.
A major highlight was our recent trip to the historic Queen Eleanor Cross. The children stepped back in time, showing brilliant listening skills and asking wonderful questions as they explored local history right on our doorstep.
Back in the classroom, our design and technology work truly came alive with some hands-on cooking and food experiments. The children put their culinary skills to the test by making their very own pizzas and whipping up a delicious Eton Mess! They practised essential kitchen safety, using the safe 'bridge method' to carefully chop up their ingredients. It was wonderful to see them exploring different textures, measuring toppings, and learning how fresh ingredients combine.
We are incredibly proud of how well the children have settled into the Autumn term. Thank you to all our parents and carers for your continued support!

Year 3
We have had a fantastic start to the term in Year 3! In Science, we have been learning about the bones in our bodies and the important jobs they do. The children especially enjoyed our English experience day, where they explored different winter smells to inspire their writing. In History, we have begun learning about the Stone Age and have loved discovering what life was like for people living thousands of years ago. We are very proud of the children's enthusiasm and positive attitude towards their learning.

Year 4
Year 4 have had a busy and exciting week of learning! Alongside working incredibly hard on TTRS, the children enjoyed making their own houmous, learning about ingredients, food preparation and healthy eating. In science, they also took part in a fascinating experiment using toothpaste and eggs to explore how toothpaste helps protect our teeth from decay.
A huge well done to the Danes, who were the winners of this week’s TTRS battle! Could the Huns take the crown next week? Keep practising, keep earning those points and keep battling. We can't wait to see next week's results!

Year 5
This term, Year 5 have really thrown themselves into their new surroundings with enthusiasm. They have shown great creativity and imagination by writing a fantastic story and a well-thought-out poem. They explored scientific investigations, learning about gravity and friction through practical experiments, including creating their very own parachute. They've learnt all about the Ancient Shang Dynasty in History, whilst in Geography they explored different aspects of the world around them. After eight busy weeks of learning, they have certainly earned their break.

Year 6
This term, Year 6 had an exciting science lesson exploring the circulatory system through the dissection of a real heart. Pupils carefully examined the different parts of the heart, identifying the chambers, valves and major blood vessels while learning how blood is pumped around the body. The hands-on experience brought our learning to life and helped the children develop their scientific observation skills, ask thoughtful questions and deepen their understanding of how this vital organ works.

We have had a fantastic start to the term in Honeypot!
This term, we have been working hard on learning and following our daily routines, as well as using pictures, gestures and signals to communicate our wants and needs more independently.
As part of our topic work, we have been exploring different parts of our faces. We have enjoyed looking in mirrors, pointing to our facial features and creating our own face pictures using a variety of materials.
In our fine motor activities, we have been developing our early writing and cutting skills. The children have been practising how to hold paintbrushes, pencils and scissors correctly, helping them to build the strength and control needed for drawing, mark-making and cutting.
We are very proud of how well the children have settled into class and look forward to sharing more of their achievements throughout the term! 🌟
If you would like to visit our Honeypot Room, please contact the office and ask for a Honeypot Tour.
