Message from the Headteacher
|
|
As we come to the end of the Autumn term, I want to thank our wonderful school community for the warm welcome I have received since joining in September. It has been a real pleasure getting to know our families and spending time with the children, especially during the festive build-up to Christmas. I have thoroughly enjoyed the performances and celebrations that have made this term so special. I hope you all have a restful and joyful Christmas break, and I look forward to welcoming everyone back in the New Year on Tuesday 6th January.

Ghana Week
Our fundraising ‘Ghana Week’ was a huge success; we raised £1300 for the children in the village of Mankuadze. This, along with your generous donations, helped to provide them with educational resources and new learning opportunities. The children were so excited and grateful to have the bracelets, books and postcards that the Abbey Primary children made for them and are spending time creating their own messages to send back to us. Miss Lambert had a wonderful time in Ghana and is very thankful for all the support received from parents, carers and children.

Remembrance
On Tuesday 11th November, we were incredibly proud of the children during the school Remembrance Service. Their respect and thoughtfulness were truly moving. In preparation, every child made a paper poppy on Monday, and our House Captains worked hard to collect these and create beautiful poppy wreaths. During the service, some of the Year 6 pupils read the poignant poem “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae. The House Captains, accompanied by Reception children from their houses, then laid the wreaths in the centre of our grass area—a moment of unity and reflection for us all. We were delighted to welcome Mr Coe, our Chair of Governors, to join us for this special occasion.
Celebrating Different Cultures
On Friday 29th November, the school experienced a day full of Scottish spirit as we celebrated St Andrew’s Day. The children were greeted by the sound of bagpipes, and Mr Murray (our Year 6 teacher) looked very smart in his traditional Scottish outfit! He and Mr Plowman, our PE lead, organised Abbey Primary’s very own Highland Games, which were a huge success and great fun for everyone.
The children across the school are collecting stickers for their Cultural Passports each time we learn about a different festival that is celebrated by some children from our community. So far we have explored Dwiali, Remembrance, St Andrew’s Day and Great Union Day (Romania’s National Day). The children are looking forward to seeing what celebration we will be learning about next!

Kindness Advent Calendar
This December, our Kindness Advent Calendar initiative has filled the school with warmth and positivity. It has been truly heartwarming to see so many children completing kind acts each day and proudly wearing their kindness stickers. From helping friends to sharing smiles, the spirit of generosity and thoughtfulness is shining brightly across our classrooms and playgrounds. What a wonderful way to celebrate the season

Year 5/6 Sport Event
On Friday 5th December, a team of pupils from Years 5 and 6 represented our school at a Sports Event, competing against 12 other teams. We were incredibly proud of their fantastic attitude, teamwork, and determination—and even more thrilled to bring home the Silver Award for second place! A huge congratulations to all involved.

Online Safety
On Wednesday 3rd December, children in KS2 took part in Online Safety Workshops, learning about the importance of staying safe online. These sessions were invaluable in helping our pupils understand how to make smart choices and protect themselves in the digital world.

Rocksteady Concert
On Monday 8th December, the school hall was absolutely packed with children and parents, all eager to watch five amazing school bands perform in a Rocksteady Concert. The musicians ranged from six to eleven years old and showcased their talents on drums, guitar, bass guitar, keyboards, and vocals. The atmosphere was electric, and the talent on display was truly awe-inspiring—what a fantastic way to begin the festive season!

Nursery - The Vikings
The Nursery has had a wonderful time exploring classic tales such as The Three Little Pigs, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and The Gingerbread Man. They enjoyed retelling these stories through role play and building different structures with foam bricks, learning about shapes and sizes along the way. Outdoors, they loved riding the diddy cars and balance bikes, as well as experimenting with water and sand. As Christmas approaches, the children have been busy using their creative skills to make festive crafts to bring home. It has been a joy to see them learn songs and join Reception in their nativity performance on Tuesday – we were so proud of them!

Reception – The Celts & The Romans
We have explored ‘Marvellous Machines’ and looked at how machines help us in everyday life. We used machines to help us clean up and make food. The Fire Service and Police came to show us their vehicles and equipment and talk to us about how they help in the community.

Year 1 – The Greeks & The Normans
This term Year 1 have been learning about space, through our story of ‘The way back home’. We have been exploring the moon and creating our own using papier mache.
In our ‘share a story’ session, we read different texts with years 5 and 6, listening to each other and discussing what had happened in the story.
We have learnt about the 7 continents in Geography, the human body in Science, and we have been designing, building and evaluating our own vehicles in our DT unit ‘Taxi’.

Year 2 - The Saxons
We are loving our Still Life unit in Year 2 this term.
The children are producing some amazing sketches and looking forward to creating their final piece.
In Geography, we have been having a look at the different temperatures around the world and exploring the United Kingdom in greater detail. Also, we have been busy building upon our knowledge of habitats and how they support living things in science.
In between all of this, we have decorated cakes and biscuits for our Ghana bake sale, celebrated Great Union Day, took part in St Andrew’s Day activities and, of course, been getting ready for our festive performance! Phew, it has been busy!

Year 3 – The Franks & The Picts
We have had a busy and productive term. In Design Technology, the children explored different ways to cook potatoes and prepared Black Bean Tacos, learning practical skills such as dicing, crushing, and peeling.
In History, they discovered interesting facts about the Stone Age, and in Geography, they studied different climate zones around the world.
In English, the class wrote winter-themed poems and decorated chocolate yule logs as part of their persuasive writing work. It’s been a term full of learning and creativity.

Year 4 – The Huns & The Danes
Year 4 have had a busy half-term.
The children loved reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as well as reading about Great Women Scientists. We have worked hard on our times tables – something which will be continued into next term!
The children produced some excellent wall hangings during our “Warp and Weft” unit, and enjoyed learning about the Battle of Hastings in history!
Time for a well-deserved rest and roll on a very exciting 2026!

Year 5 – The Gaels & The Jutes
Year 5 have had a wonderful term learning about space. The children have been fascinated by the universe beyond planet Earth. Mr Coe brought in his telescope for the children to see. He explained to them how the mirrors reflect images of space, allowing astronomers to discover more about the planets in our solar system. We finished off our learning with an out-of-this-world trip to the Space Centre. The children loved exploring the rocket tower (even if they did have to walk the 140 steps up!), finding a real piece of the moon, dressing up as aliens and watching the Apollo 11 moon landing.
A real highlight of the day was a journey through space in the planetarium, which captivated them all. We were very proud of all the children and how well they represented the school during our trip!

Year 6 – The Lombards & The Angles
Year 6 have been learning about ‘Food for life’ this term. They have made homemade bread and compared this with shop-bought processed bread. After mastering the art of baking, they got creative and had an Abbey Primary Bake Off Bread week. They added whole food ingredients to their recipe and there were some very impressive examples and their sales pitches were equally as exciting. Alongside this, we have continued to learn about the slave trade in History and read a brilliant book linked to this called 'The Kingdom of Benin.'
