Curriculum & Learning
At The Abbey Primary School Nursery, we provide a fun, exciting and nurturing curriculum that helps children develop the skills they need to become confident, happy and independent learners. Our learning is carefully planned around engaging themes that spark children's curiosity and encourage exploration through play.
Throughout the year, children will learn about a variety of topics including, All Around Me, Sparkles and Celebrations, Dinosaurs, At the Farm, Down in the Garden, and On the Beach. These themes are brought to life through stories, role play, creative activities, outdoor learning, songs, rhymes, discussions and hands-on experiences.
Our curriculum supports all areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), including:
- Communication and Language – developing speaking, listening and vocabulary through stories, conversations and play.
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development – building confidence, independence, friendships and understanding of feelings.
- Physical Development – developing gross and fine motor skills through outdoor play, PE and creative activities.
- Literacy – fostering a love of books, stories, rhymes and early mark-making and writing.
- Mathematics – exploring number, shape, pattern and problem-solving through practical activities.
- Understanding the World – learning about people, communities, nature, animals, celebrations and the environment.
- Expressive Arts and Design – encouraging creativity through art, music, dance, construction and imaginative play.
Our Nursery curriculum is underpinned by our school's 5 Bees values: Be Yourself, Be Your Best, Be Honest and Helpful, Be Thoughtful and Fair, and Be Caring and Kind. These values help children develop positive relationships, resilience and a lifelong love of learning.
We work closely with parents and carers throughout the year and provide a rich range of experiences, including visits, visitors, celebrations and special events, to make learning meaningful, memorable and enjoyable for every child.
